As the Entire nation is fighting the covid19 pandemic and trying all the measures to come to normalcy, the problem of Locust attack is worrying many in different states of the country. These are spreading to different states from the past few days and are considered as a threat to farmers produce and crops.
Locusts belong to the family of grasshoppers that usually present in the semi-arid regions of the country mainly in Rajasthan. These are feared to cause severe agriculture damage. When there are present in small groups they are not considered significant, but the present scenarios are that large swarms of these are spreading across the country and a single swarm contains 40 million adults in one square km and can travel up to 150 km in a day.
Locust is present in semi-arid regions because these are the areas that are suitable for laying their eggs. Hence mostly these are present in the large barren lands of Rajasthan. But when these eggs lay off, they need food to grow into adults hence they move towards plains in search of food. When these come individually these are not considered dangerous as a small group will not cause much harm to the crop.
When these are present in small groups there is no significant worry. But When these form large groups there is a behavioural change that happens and will lead to the forming of large swarms. There is a report that is published based on the problem of locust mentioning the reasons why this year such a large group of insects are causing the problem. As said earlier swarms contain a large number of adults. These large groups are formed only in favourable conditions, that is a deserts area for laying of eggs and hatching, and a nearby plain for feeding on and growing into adults.
But this year different compared to other years. In addition to the pandemic situation this year we have seen some noting situations across the country, they are unseasonal rainfalls and the cyclone Amphan. Since the beginning of this year, some of these conditions for locusts in multiplying their numbers. The largescale breeding is because of the unusual rainfall this year, which lead to an increase in the number of immature adults. And when the cyclone Amphan hit the coastal areas, the wind made these swarms of locusts move towards central parts of the country. Hence the main reason for these new problems of occurrence of swarms of locusts is attributed to the occurrence of unseasonal rainfall which increases its number and the cyclone Amphan which diverted its movement.
Another important thing to note is that these swarms contain a large number of immature adults which feed on vegetation. Since this is the time of Kharif crops, this will cause huge damage. These insects will eat the amount of food equal to its weight. That is very huge considering the number of insects that are present in one square km.
That is it to be know from the point of locust problem in India. We come with Another important article soon in Dshots.
Thanks. stay safe stay health.
